Laser Treatments in Kansas City: A Provider's Guide to What We Use and When
I get the question every week: "What's the best laser?"
It's like asking what the best tool is in a hardware store. The answer is: best for what? Hammers and screwdrivers don't compete; they do different jobs. Lasers are the same.
At Eden, we use several different laser and energy-based devices because different concerns need different tools. Here's the honest, provider-led guide to what we use and when.
Erbium — the deep reset
Erbium is an ablative laser, which means it removes the very top layer of damaged skin. The result is dramatic and the downtime is real — typically 5 to 7 days of looking like you have a sunburn before fresh, smoother, brighter skin emerges underneath.
We choose Erbium for: etched-in fine lines, textural sun damage, mild-to-moderate acne scars, and patients who want the biggest single-session result and are willing to schedule downtime to get it.
Not the right tool for: active rosacea, deeply pigmented skin types without careful evaluation, or patients with zero recovery time available.
IPL — the brown-and-red eraser
IPL (intense pulsed light) isn't technically a laser — it's a broad-spectrum light treatment — but it lives in the same toolbox. It targets pigment and vascular concerns at the surface.
We choose IPL for: sun spots, freckling, mild redness and broken capillaries on the cheeks, and overall tone evenness. Multiple sessions are usually part of the plan.
Not the right tool for: texture (it doesn't resurface), or for very dark skin types without careful evaluation.
Microneedling with RF — collagen rebuild
Not a laser, but in the same category — microneedling delivers tiny controlled injuries through fine needles, and the radiofrequency energy heats the deeper layers to stimulate collagen.
We choose RF microneedling for: softening fine lines, improving textural laxity, treating acne scars, and patients who want collagen-rebuild results without the downtime of an ablative laser.
Not the right tool for: active acne breakouts, severe sun damage that really needs an ablative pass, or surface pigment (IPL is better for that).
How we decide
In your consult, we look at your skin in person and ask three questions: what bothers you most, what's your skin actually doing, and what's your real life look like in the week after a treatment? The answers shape which device makes sense.
Most patients end up with a combination over time — IPL for the surface, RF microneedling for the structure, and an occasional Erbium pass when they have a free week. We sequence them in the right order, with the right pre- and post-care.
Your skin needs different things at different times.
Pre and post care matters more than the device
The single biggest predictor of a good laser result isn't which laser — it's how you prep and how you recover.
Sun protection in the weeks before and after is non-negotiable. Sometimes we'll have you on a prescription regimen for 4 to 6 weeks before treatment to optimize your barrier. Sometimes we'll layer in compounded skincare on the back end to extend results. We don't laser and hope. We plan.
Real provider. Real plan.
